HOW
NET METERING
WORKS.
The grid is your free battery.
NSP must credit every kWh
you export at full retail rate.
01
Panels produce power
Light hits your roof. PV panels convert it to electricity. Your home uses it live — lights, appliances, heating — in real time.
02
Excess flows to the grid
When your panels produce more than your home needs, the surplus flows automatically to Nova Scotia Power's grid.
03
NSP credits your account
By law, NSP credits your account at the full retail rate for every kilowatt-hour you export. Credits sit ready to use.
04
Draw credits when needed
At night, cloudy days, winter — whenever panels aren't producing enough, you draw from your balance. The grid is your battery. Free.
Think of it as a bank account for electricity
Summer
Big deposits — excess to grid
Long days, high production. Credits accumulate fast.
Spring / Fall
Moderate deposits
Balanced — some credits built, some grid draw.
Winter
Draw credits
Shorter days — use credits built up in summer.
Why this changed everything
Before net metering, storing solar required a $15–20k battery system. Net metering made the grid your battery — at zero cost.
Regulated under Nova Scotia Electricity Act — NSP is legally required to offer net metering to qualifying homeowners.
